On October 20, 2007, representatives of the initial seven Afemai-affiliated associations met in Dallas, Texas, following earlier unsuccessful attempts by various groups or individuals to form a global organization focused on serving the interests of Afemai people and Afemai-land. The Group of Seven comprised: Afemai Club of Southern California, Association of Afemai Peoples of New England, Etsakor USA of New Jersey, Weppa Wanno Union, Afashio Progressive Union, Afemai International Organization (Dallas), and Afemai Community of America (Houston, Texas).
During the Dallas meeting, the designated representatives of the Group of Seven discussed and adopted an interim constitution for AWC. This constitution established two primary governance arms for AWC: the Executive Board (administrative arm) and the House of Delegates (legislative arm).
In accordance with the provisions of the interim constitution, representatives of the participating seven organizations were sworn in as new members of the AWC House of Delegates by Dr. Mohammed Mustafa Lecky, the Galadima of Auchi Sacred Kingdom, in Dallas, Texas. These representatives were assigned various leadership positions within the House of Delegates, with Ms. Stella Ejedawe (Afemai Club of Southern California) as Leader; Dr. Osilama Osime (Association of Afemai Peoples of New England) as Deputy Leader/Secretary; Mike Abdul (Afemai Community in America, Houston, TX) as Treasurer; Mike Oshiokpekhai (Afashio Progressive Union) as Public Relations Officer; and Major Nasir Usman (Afenmai International Organization) and Adamu Braimah (Etsakor USA, New Jersey) as members.
The House of Delegates was tasked with reviewing the Constitution further to prepare it for final approval and ratification by the delegates at the upcoming convention in Los Angeles, California. The Interim Committee was also directed to organize the inaugural convention of the Congress, scheduled for July 5, 2008, in Los Angeles, California, where the first Executive Board of the Congress would be elected.
The inaugural convention on July 5, 2008, was successfully organized by the Interim Committee in collaboration with the Afemai Club of Southern California, serving as co-host at the Hilton Grand Hotel in Los Angeles, California.
